The U.S. Virgin Islands, aka
"THE
THREE VIRGINS" are considered to be a tropical paradise, these
wonderful islands and their surrounding clear and warm waters. The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of three islands; St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John.
St. Croix (population 52,000) is the largest of the three islands
and about 35 miles south of St. Thomas. It is the home of the largest oil refinery (Hovensa,
L.L.C) in the western hemisphere, but due to the prevailing trade winds,
pollution is never a problem.
As a U.S. territory, it enjoys the protection and followship
of the United
States,
but is a world-class duty free shopping port and is exempt from many U.S.
Customs laws.
Seven
nations flags have flown over this island paradise, where Christopher
Columbus landed at Salt River, now a national historic site and Federal
park. The Spanish, French, English, Dutch, Knights of Malta, Danes, and
the United States have contributed
to the heritage of our islands, blending with the native Indians and Africans
to form our unique Caribbean culture.
St.Croix has been called “An Island of Superlatives”
by the travel industry. It boasts pristine beaches, the nation’s only
underwater National Park at Buck Island, two golf courses including the
Robert Trent Jones masterpiece Carambola built by Laurance Rockefeller,
and a host of gourmet restaurants.
The scenic beauty of St.Croix is magnificent, the
dry east end is dotted with cactus, a huge satellite dish built by NASA
for “outer space listening” and even a Contessa’s mountaintop castle. The
fertile central land once bore acres of sugar cane and now is the center
of the island’s population, and the rain forest of the west end has towering
mahogany trees dating back to the 1700s. Hundreds of historic ruins of
sugar mills and great houses built of stone and coral are found all over
the island.
Whether visiting St.Croix on business or pleasure,
via oil tanker, cruise ship, or airline, Star Marine Agency LLC welcomes
you to our island home. Ahoy!
